The 5 Stages of Impact - Understanding Impact Series

When you think about having an impact on a person, team or project it may feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you do? How do you measure it? And How much is enough?

In the Understanding Impact Series we define and describe impact by the Stages, Roles, Reach and Purpose.

This series is intended to create a framework for understanding the ‘what’ of impact, rather than the ‘how’. We cover ‘how to create impact’ in our ImpactLadder programs.

This article covers the 5 Stages of Impact in the Understanding Impact Series.

The 5 stages of impact are:

  1. Understand
  2. Help
  3. Empower
  4. Elevate
  5. Transform

1. Understand

At the most basic level people feel appreciated and positively impacted by your interactions with them if they have been simply ‘heard and understood’.

When you’re listening intently look out for the following three categories of what people want you to know:

  • What are people thinking (head), most often a situation or problem is top of mind;
  • What are people feeling (heart), this may be happy, sad, anxious, fearful or excited;
  • What do people want (desires)

2. Help

The next level of impact is when people have been ‘helped’.

Having ‘heard and understood’ people, you can further impact them by when you:

  • solve their problems
  • address their feelings
  • meet their wants

3. Empower

The next level of impact is when people have been ‘empowered’.

Having ‘heard and understood people’ when you empower them to

  • solve their problems
  • address their feelings
  • meet their wants

4. Elevate

The next level of impact is when people have been ‘elevated’.

Having understood people’s wants and desires you can create the next level of impact people by ‘boosting or supercharging’ their path towards their objectives.

This may come via connecting people to people, championing or promoting them, their cause or their capabilities.

5. Transform

The next level of impact is when people have been ‘transformed’

Here your impact is profound and long lasting as you have enabled people to become a better version of themselves. Usually this means you’ve impacted their:

  • Mindset
  • Skills
  • Habits
